In August 2018 we heard the devastating news of the severe floods in Kerala, South India and although the sisters in Makkiyad and Piravom are safe, the heavy, unrelenting rainfall is making life very difficult these days. At St Scholastica’s Convent in Makkiyad, the rain caused serious landslides and the pictures show how the soil from our land has fallen onto the road outside the convent. Meanwhile there are many families of our sisters who have had to leave their homes and are staying in camps. Please pray that it will soon be safe for them to return to their villages and that their lives will soon return to normal. Let us remember all those who have lost their loved ones, their homes and their land.
On 11th July, the feast of St Benedict, Sister Theresa celebrated her Golden Jubilee of Profession at Holy Cross Priory, surrounded by her community and friends. She is only the second Golden Jubilarian in the Congregation, and was one of the first to make her Novitiate at Holy Cross Priory. Sister Sheila was the first sister to celebrate her Golden Jubilee, in 2015 and she made history by being the first sister to make her First Profession of Vows at Holy Cross Priory in 1965. Sister Sheila is now living at Holy Cross Care Home following several weeks in hospital earlier this year. Sister Gabrielle, our oldest sister is also in Holy Cross Care Home and has reached the grand age of 96. Sister Elizabeth who lives at St Mary’s will also be 96 this year!
